Authorities are searching for the potentially armed wife of a Massachusetts police officer after he was found dead in the couple’s Worcester home this week.
Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said Karen Solomon, 58, is evading authorities following the death of her husband, Kurt Solomon, 57, on Tuesday.
Police said Mrs. Solomon was in the home at the time her husband died.
But authorities have not shared a cause of death for the 31-year veteran of the Worcester police force, saying only that his death stemmed from a domestic incident.
“You got a person in the neighborhood, in the area, presumed to be armed and dangerous. You want to do everything you can to find that person as quickly as possible, and also find out exactly what happened at the house that evening,” Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.
Investigators shared footage Wednesday of Mrs. Solomon walking by an animal clinic near their home at about the time 911 was called. She was last seen wearing pajama shorts and a tank top.
Police have focused their search in a wooded area and small body of water less than a mile from the Solomons’ home.
Mrs. Solomon co-founded and runs an organization called First H.E.L.P., which provides mental health assistance to law enforcement and first responders, plus supports the families of first responders who died by suicide.
“Our first concern is for the officer who lost his life, his family, his colleagues, and the Worcester law-enforcement community,” the group said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”
The New England Police Benevolent Association remembered Mr. Solomon as a dependable colleague and friend during his three decades with Worcester police.
Police union President Thomas Duffy told the press that Mr. Solomon’s death “is deeply being felt by the men and women of this department right now.”
Mr. Duffy added, “When you serve 31 years with an individual, you become more than co-workers. You become family, and today we lost a member of our family. Just a tremendous human being. Extremely committed. Always reliable. Always dedicated to the job and to the citizens.”
