Apple Music will introduce a “Made With AI” label for songs later this year.

In an email sent to industry partners that was viewed by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple noted that this new disclaimer will be used to signify whether a “material portion” of a song’s content has been generated using AI. This follows the service’s introduction of AI Transparency Tags in March which require artists and companies to disclose whether their song features AI use.

Apple didn’t specify when these labels would roll out or how it plans to enforce them. That said, the announcement comes one month after major entertainment industry organizations like the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Grammys and SAG-AFTRA jointly called upon streamers to more clearly label AI music. Apple’s move also follows Spotify’s announcement last week about adding more detailed AI labels next month.

These kinds of initiatives are important at a time when so much online content, including music, is being generated by AI. Apple, for its part, told Billboard earlier this year that “more than a third” of the tracks on Apple Music are “100 per cent AI.” And last year, a study by streaming app Deezer found that around 50,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded to Spotify every day — 37 per cent of the total daily submissions.
