    While larger companies can more easily invest in operational systems for accounting, HR, IT and marketing, small businesses often rely on lean teams to manage operations, reach customers, balance the books and strategize for the future.

    Technology is changing what is possible for small businesses. Bank of America Institute data shows small businesses have increased their spending on tech services, including artificial intelligence tools. That said, spending more does not always mean spending better, and the challenge lies in identifying which tools will drive growth and then putting them to good use.

    Here are three strategies small business owners can use to do exactly that.

    1. Prioritize efficiency, reach and engagement

    With thousands of digital tools on the market, many owners find it difficult to know if they are making the right choices. When evaluating tools, they can start by organizing their priorities around three goals: efficiency, reach and customer engagement.

    Efficiency: Some of the most immediate gains from digital tools show up in efficiency, with early AI adopters citing improvements in productivity and operational efficiency, according to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation/Hiring Our Heroes whitepaper. But AI is just one piece of the puzzle.

    Project management platforms, scheduling tools and payment processing software can all eliminate many of the manual steps that slow teams down. Accounting and financial management platforms can automate inventory tracking, invoicing and demand forecasting, while customer relationship management (CRM) software can generate follow-ups and surface data-backed insights that inform smarter decision-making.

    Reach: Tools like ecommerce platforms and advertising services enable small businesses to sell far beyond their locale and target customers on a national or even global scale. Plus, the data needed to optimize these efforts is often built into the ecommerce, CRM and email marketing platforms many businesses already use. In this way, business owners can not only expand their reach, but gain a clearer picture of what is working, who is buying and where to focus next.

    Engagement: Beyond delivering quality products or services, today’s businesses often thrive when they make their customers feel known. Email marketing platforms, loyalty programs and personalized website content can go a long way in driving long-term loyalty. Product recommendation engines, which suggest relevant items based on a customer’s browsing history or past purchases, can enable easier product discovery. Chatbots, whether AI-powered or not, can provide faster support when something goes wrong.

    2. Elevate the customer experience

    The customer experience is more multifaceted than ever, happening across channels: on a brand’s website, on social media or in a brick-and-mortar store. According to a 2026 survey, 93% of shoppers report that they are more likely to continue shopping with a brand when it gets personalization right, making this a key priority for small businesses looking to build lasting customer relationships.

    Digital tools can help small business owners deliver on this at every touchpoint. Social media advertising platforms, for example, enable targeted campaigns that reach new customer segments. In fact, 83% of marketers are confident in social media advertising’s return on investment (ROI), per a 2026 Hootsuite report, making it an investment worth considering.

    Built-in analytics help owners understand what resonates and adjust spending in real time. Beyond attracting new customers, tools that support seamless checkout and automate post-purchase follow-up can help sustain a business.

    3. Foster a culture of innovation

    Small businesses can face greater challenges when evaluating, adopting and using emerging technologies, often due to hurdles like uncertainty about ROI, cybersecurity concerns and workforce resistance.
