    Each download of every episode is a small deposit into an asset that compounds over time if you treat it like one. Put simply, podcasting can be a major revenue vertical in your business plan.

    Here is the secret: Treat your podcast like a product, not a promotion.

    Many people throw content and episodes out into the universe without a strategic foundation. While content marketing lets your voice reach a global audience, there is so much more magic in the art of podcasting. It opens you up to a wider audience and connects you with your base weekly. A book builds authority once, as a single, static piece of work. A podcast keeps going: It’s a live experience that connects you to your listener in an intimate, recurring way. Your unique voice has so much power.

    Shifting from marketing to building a business vertical is achieved through consistency, awareness and hitting 5,000 downloads per month. Once you cross that threshold, you have the potential to monetize with programmatic advertising inserted into every episode. Both of my podcasts, Creative Entrepreneur and Get Obsessed: With Living Your Best Life, are picked up by the BLEAV network (think NBC syndication), which promotes us and connects us with advertisers.

    Think of your podcast as a piece of real estate. You own a piece of “land” that remains in the universe in perpetuity. It has the power to connect and promote your brand and business while you sleep. Each episode is an extension of your brand, pulling in avid listeners and possible partners, sponsors or clients.

    The revenue architecture

    You can be very creative with your monetization strategy, including landing a partnership from day one. Sponsors and partners crave access to an established community or base. My podcast Creative Entrepreneur was monetized from day one because I already had an established community of podcasters and media broadcasters who were the perfect demographic for that sponsor. Our community thrived on the Mighty Networks platform and has since migrated to the Skool platform.

    I created an irresistible brand and place for sponsors to land, including a personalized website with full stats and opportunities. Curating an interactive website that highlights your community, download statistics, notable guests and overall genre offers potential sponsors/partners a space to know everything about your brand.

    Be proactive:

    • Pitch 100 sponsors
    • Be specific in every pitch, not boilerplate, and point out exactly why their brand is a fit

    I get pitched daily. The majority of these pitches end up in my trash bin, unless they stand out. Give the recipient a reason to open your email.

    Building the infrastructure

    I still remember the exact moment I stopped treating my podcast like a hobby. Before I had even one sponsor, I built a media kit. I developed a posting schedule and stuck to it even when I didn’t feel like it.

    I identified a niche and eliminated guest opportunities that didn’t fit the mold I dreamed of. See, this is the infrastructure nobody witnesses — and it’s why my sponsors said “yes” when I reached out to them.

    A podcast builds an audience for events, credibility for partnerships and raw material for other channels, all at once. Repurposing the podcast is a huge advantage. One episode can become content for blogs, social media, newsletters and email pushes.

    What you need to be aware of

    Throwing content into the wind without a strategy gets you nowhere. Podcasting has a high burnout rate. Podfade is real, and most podcasters never make it past five episodes. Launching and early growth both take a heavy lift, and results rarely come immediately.

    • Join a community
    • Get educated or hire a podcast producer
    • Understand that quality and consistency are what separate the podcasts that make it from the ones that don’t

    Practical first steps

    Treat your podcast like a business, not a side hustle. Know definitively who your audience is and what problem you solve, and niche it down. Find big guests who share your ethos and pitch them. The worst thing they can say is no. Landing them builds your authority and attracts even bigger guests and sponsors.

    Here’s how I monetize both of my podcasts:

    • Programmatic advertising
    • Host-read ads
    • Speaking on stages
    • Brand partnerships
    • A podcasting community
    • Coaching and advising high-level podcast clients
    • Building live events, like Cre8tive Con

    Podcasting is not something you publish online and walk away from. It’s something you build on weekly, and each episode adds value to what’s already there. It’s not magic. I built a media kit before the first sponsor, chose a niche before the first big guest and maintained the effort and consistency that outlasts podcasters who quit after episode five.

    That’s my “how.” The “why” is easier to understand. When you build a podcast like a business from the start, everything else simply falls into place — and don’t worry, the chase will eventually find you.
