Today‘s Savannah Guthrie Has Been Part Of Today Since 2011
Guthrie is a main co-anchor on NBC News’ Today. She has held this position since 2012, joining the show the year before. Guthrie previously joined the network in 2007.
Guthrie was recently absent during this past Monday morning’s broadcast. However, another NBC figure could be seen at the studio.
Viewers saw Kristen Welker fill in for Guthrie and sit alongside Craig Melvin. Melvin acknowledged the change at the start of the show, saying that Savannah was simply “enjoying some time off.” He didn’t reveal just how long she would be away from the morning show. However, he hinted that it could be the whole week.
Welker traveled from NBC‘s Washington, D.C. studios, where she normally anchors Meet the Press full-time. With her in New York, Melvin teased that she could “take in some tennis” while she’s in town. This was in reference to the US Open, which kicked off on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York. The tournament will conclude on September 13, 2026.

For her part, Welker also highlighted her time on the show with a share on Instagram. Sharing a photo of her standing with a few Today stars, including Melvin, Dylan Dreyer, and Carson Daly, she wrote, “So wonderful to join the @todayshow crew and @craigmelvin while @savannahguthrie takes a much-deserved break.” Thanks to this, many believe that Welker will be on the show for quite a while.
For the time being, Guthrie has not shared her whereabouts during this recent break. She has taken multiple leaves of absence from the show over the past year. Earlier this year, Guthrie took time off from the show in light of her mother Nancy going missing in Arizona. She has also taken time off to work on the game show adaptation of Wordle, which she is set to host for NBC. She had been gone for several weeks back in July.
With Welker’s latest social media share, fans have also been commenting on her recent appearance on the show. Quite a few Today viewers were happy to see her. Some comments included:
