India captain Shubman Gill produced a moment of brilliance on Day 4 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, pulling off a spectacular running catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis and break a crucial partnership. The hosts had begun their second innings with their backs against the wall, but a determined fightback from Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Mendis had briefly shifted the momentum before Gill’s stunning effort restored India’s control.

India enforce follow-on after massive first-innings lead

India dominated the opening phases of the day after Sri Lanka resumed their first innings with the aim of narrowing a sizeable deficit. Overnight batter Sonal Dinusha showed tremendous resolve and completed a hard-earned century, giving the home side some hope of avoiding further damage.

However, India’s bowlers quickly wrapped up the remaining wickets, bowling Sri Lanka out for 290. The total left India with a commanding 213-run first-innings advantage. Gill opted against giving his bowlers a long break and immediately enforced the follow-on, putting Sri Lanka straight back into bat and leaving them with the enormous task of saving the Test.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis lead Sri Lanka’s fightback

Sri Lanka initially struggled to find their footing in the second innings, but Sooriyabandara and Mendis changed the complexion of the contest with a determined partnership. The pair settled into their respective roles and gradually put pressure back on the Indian attack. They combined caution with attacking strokes, frustrating the bowlers and ensuring that wickets did not come easily.

Their partnership eventually crossed the 100-run mark, with both batters reaching their individual half-centuries. By the time Sri Lanka moved to 199/3 after 56 overs, the hosts had significantly reduced the deficit and given themselves a genuine chance of extending the game. The partnership was particularly important because India had appeared to be in complete command earlier in the day. Sri Lanka’s resistance meant India needed something special to regain the initiative.

That moment arrived just before the break, courtesy of the Indian skipper. Prasidh Krishna bowled a short delivery angled across Mendis, who decided to take on the challenge. The left-hander had previously managed boundaries against Krishna’s short-ball strategy, which may have encouraged him to attack once again.

This time, however, Mendis failed to get the desired connection. The ball took the upper portion of the bat and ballooned towards the square-leg region.

Gill immediately sprang into action. The captain raced backwards, adjusted his position while keeping his eyes firmly on the ball and then launched himself into a dive. He completed the difficult chance with both hands, producing a catch that drew a huge reaction from his teammates.
