The U.S. is walking back its demands for Canada to remove requirements related to Canadian content (CanCon) and bilingual labelling.

U.S.-Canada Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed the news on X (Twitter), the latest update in a heated trade war between the two countries.

“Canada is pleased that the United States is now reversing its positions regarding discoverability and labeling, and that it confirms that measures aimed at promoting the French language and Canadian culture will not be subject to future trade measures on the part of the United States,” he wrote.

    — Dominic LeBlanc (@DLeBlancNB) August 27, 2026

LeBlanc is referring to a series of U.S. demands that Prime Minister Mark Carney said ultimately contributed to trade talks falling through. Specifically, the U.S. had taken issue with Canada requiring foreign streamers like Netflix and Disney+ to promote CanCon on their platform and companies to offer English and French packaging in compliance with Quebec language laws. This came even after Canada axed plans to require U.S. streamers to pay a base requirement into the production of CanCon.

U.S. President Donald Trump, for his part, denied ever making these demands. On his Truth Social platform, he claimed he “would never interfere with Canadians speaking French” and that he loves French Canadians. And because he has the emotional maturity of a toddler, he had to throw in digs at Carney, claiming these demands were “made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec.”

But of course, every accusation is, as they say, a confession, and Trump, who tells tens of thousands of lies, recently held his lowest approval rating at 33 per cent. Carney, by comparison, had a 66 per cent approval rating three weeks ago per Spark, with his highest number (71 per cent) actually coming from Quebec. In other words, that’s quite different from Trump’s claims that the PM has “totally lost” support in the province.

It remains to be seen what else will come out this awful and unjustified trade war that the U.S. has launched against Canada.
