Sixteen years after David Fincher’s The Social Network chronicled Facebook’s founding, Aaron Sorkin is heading back to the same universe with The Social Reckoning. Sorkin both writes and directs this companion film, which trades the dorm-room energy of the original for a much darker chapter in the company’s history.
The story centers on Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a Facebook engineer who partners with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose internal documents showing the company knew about the real-world harm caused by its platform and chose profit over addressing it. It’s a dramatization of the events behind the 2021 Facebook Files exposé. Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Mark Zuckerberg, taking over from Jesse Eisenberg, and the trailer teases a tense courtroom confrontation between the two leads.
The supporting cast includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr. Production wrapped late last year after filming in Vancouver, and Sony/Columbia Pictures is bringing the film to theaters on October 9, 2026, skipping the festival circuit for now.
Given how much public sentiment toward Facebook has shifted since 2010, this feels less like a nostalgia play and more like a reckoning (pun intended) with the platform’s legacy. Whether it can match the cultural impact of the original remains to be seen, but with Sorkin’s dialogue-driven style and this cast, expectations are high.
