Xabi Alonso described Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton as a valuable three points, while confirming that Moises Caicedo will be assessed after the midfielder was forced off in the second half.

Chelsea were in complete control for large portions of the contest, racing into a three-goal lead through Romeo Lavia’s first Chelsea goal, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro.

Brighton hit back with goals from Malick Yalcouye and an own goal from Joao Pedro to make it nervy, but Cole Palmer’s curling effort from 20 yards restored the Blues’ advantage and ultimately proved the winner, despite a late Pascal Gross consolation.

“All the wins I enjoy a lot, but it was a game that in different moments had different feelings,” Alonso said in his post-match press conference.

“In the end, we’re happy with the result. We value this win against a very good opponent who have been tough in the last few years.

“We are happy with that, and there are things and moments that we have done well, but it’s a process to keep on learning and improving. Usually, that is easier with a win.”

The afternoon was soured by Caicedo’s fitness setback. The Ecuador international had missed Chelsea’s opening two fixtures but was introduced from the bench midway through the second half, only to be replaced by Valentin Barco just 13 minutes later.

“He was cautious to stop and say his feeling wasn’t the best,” Alonso said when asked about the injury. “We need to assess during the week, but it wasn’t something new.”

The result means Chelsea have made it two wins from two in the Premier League, with Alonso making clear there is still plenty of room for improvement despite the positive start.
