The end of an era is here: Apple CEO Tim Cook’s last day is tomorrow, September 1, as he will resign after 15 years at the helm.
Taking his place is Apple’s hardware engineering chief John Ternus. Cook will remain on Apple’s board of directors as executive chairman, where he will assist with “certain aspects” of the company, including “engaging with policymakers around the world,” according to Apple.
To add some context, Cook became the CEO of Apple in 2011 following Steve Jobs’ departure due to health concerns (and his passing two months later). Cook announced his resignation back in April.
Under Cook, Apple’s market cap went from US$350 billion (C$485.31 billion) to just under US$5 billion (C$6.93 billion). Product-wise, Apple launched the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Vision Pro, MacBook Neo, Apple Music, Apple TV, and much more during Cook’s tenure. Last year, he also gave U.S. President Donald Trump a trophy in a move that was widely criticized for being sycophantic.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said in a press release. “I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world.”
Cook described the incoming John Ternus as someone who “cares so much about who we are at Apple, what we do at Apple, who we reach at Apple, and he has the heart and character to lead with extraordinary integrity,” Cook said in an open letter. “This company will reach such incredible heights under his leadership, and you will feel his impact in every bit of delight and discovery that grows out of the products and services to come.”
