The danger did not end when the waters began to recede. The Grand Canyon is bracing for more storms after a flash flood swept through Bright Angel Canyon and the area around Phantom Ranch on Saturday, leaving at least one person dead, 15 missing or unaccounted for, and causing severe damage to the park’s infrastructure.

The National Weather Service has warned that conditions remain conducive to further flash floods due to abundant monsoon moisture and the fact that some soils are already saturated. The threat persists through Monday, with forecasts calling for more rain and storms in northern Arizona.

The situation forced authorities to maintain restrictions and tighten safety measures in one of the most visited tourist areas in the United States. The National Park Service (NPS) suspended overnight stays within the park starting Monday and asked residents and visitors to minimize their water usage.

Saturday’s storm demonstrated just how quickly conditions can change inside the canyon. A heavy downpour caused the water level of Bright Angel Creek to rise more than five feet in just 10 minutes. The current carried mud, rocks, and other debris, destroyed pedestrian bridges, and altered parts of the creek bed.

More than 60 people had to be evacuated by helicopter from the depths of the Grand Canyon. The NPS also requested information about hikers and campers who may have been at Bright Angel Creek, Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch, or the North Kaibab Trail when the flash flood occurred.

On Sunday afternoon, the body of a 46-year-old man was found near Crystal Rapids, along the Colorado River. Authorities have not publicly released further details about the victim. But in addition to search and rescue efforts, the park is facing a problem that could prolong the storm’s aftermath: the destruction of its main water supply infrastructure.

The flooding caused extensive damage to the Transcanyon Waterline, a pipeline essential for transporting water within the park. The NPS noted that it is currently inoperable, which has reduced available reserves and forced the implementation of extraordinary conservation measures.

In addition, overnight accommodations within the park will remain closed until further notice, and no date has been set for their reopening. At the South Rim campgrounds, access to certain water faucets has been suspended, although restrooms remain open. Authorities recommended limiting showers to a maximum of five minutes, turning off faucets when not in use, and reducing the frequency of toilet flushing.

The closure does not affect hotels located outside the park, in the town of Tusayan. During the day, some areas of the South Rim also remain open, although certain services may operate on a reduced schedule.

The water outage also comes as the park is in the midst of a $208 million renovation project that began in 2023. The project aims to modernize the water pipes and distribution system and was scheduled to be completed next year. The infrastructure is particularly important for a place that receives about 5 to 6 million visitors a year and is home to some 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village.

Weather risks will continue to be a determining factor over the coming weeks. The storms affecting the southwestern United States are part of the North American monsoon, a phenomenon that, at this time of year, carries warm, humid air from the Gulf of California and the tropical Pacific inland and typically lasts through September.

In the Grand Canyon, these conditions can be particularly dangerous. Storms are difficult to pinpoint accurately and can develop rapidly over mountainous terrain. When heavy rain falls on areas of the canyon, water can pool in narrow channels and quickly turn into a torrent capable of sweeping away rocks, mud, and structures.

The NPS warned that new storms could cause additional flash floods, debris flows, rockfalls, and changes in trail and river conditions. As a result, several trails and crossings remain closed while crews assess the damage.
