Family and friends united by a pain that spans decades hatch a plan to execute the newly released prisoner they blame for their collective loss. Their interconnections are convoluted and complex, as is the deal they strike with a pair of dark web assassins.
With a final fee tied to Bitcoin exchange rates and an amateurish identity trail that leaves them exposed, the panicked group of grievers agree on only one thing: ex-con Esteban must pay for his perceived transgression, one way or another.
Jeremías Segovia’s confident feature debut demands patience for its refined rewards. A tinderbox of festering heartbreak, Sweet Violence defies its evocative title for the most part, exploring the long-term aftermath of savagery with maturity and delicacy. However, when it does surrender to the conflagration of brutality it gets very nasty indeed.
The bulk of the narrative unfolds over a series of meetings and conversations that play out as if Friedrich Nietzsche had been hired as script consultant on MobLand. This coalition of mourners are invested both sentimentally and financially to varying degrees leading to internal conflict. There are also strong undercurrents of emotional blackmail and Machiavellian peer pressure that escalates the compulsion towards sadism and blinkered barbarism.

A parallel plot strand follows the attempted reintegration of the stoic Esteban as he protests his innocence and grabs desperately at the tattered remains of his past life. However, even his own mother thinks he is a murderer and the only solace he finds is in the unconditional loyalty of an adopted stray dog.
As these two perspectives play out, Segovia toys with the audience’s preconceptions and vantage points to illicit a truth tug of war where we are never quite certain who really occupies the moral high ground. This expertly cast conundrum is the bated hook that lands viewers in a keep net of gripping uncertainty.
Less developed, but economically condensed, are the two contract killers initially hired to snuff out Esteban. Aloof and ethically neutered, they remain enigmas as they revel in the empowerment afforded by off grid anonymity. Casual and cruel, they represent cold-hearted caricatures of the fuck around and find out repercussions of trawling the unindexed Badlands of the internet.
The film claims to be based on a real life case but muddies the murderous waters enough to screen any specific identifications. It most likely seems to be referencing the Lola Chomnalez case, famous for its unacceptable protraction and institutional failure. That being said, it may be more impactful to view the film as a broader representation of the public mistrust of the states homicide process, especially during Uruguay’s dictatorship-era.
A meditation on the dangers of extrajudicial punishment and a nuanced biopsy on the gnawing cancer of revenge, Sweet Violence manhandles heavyweight moral issues with surprising subtlety. Its masterful structure and restrained performances pave the way for a very clever closing shot. One that recontextualises our moral sentiments and neatly disperses any lingering ambiguity.
