India‘s refusal to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has sparked intense debate worldwide. After India’s five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final, Naqvi reportedly took the trophy and winners’ medals to his hotel room in Dubai instead of presenting them to the team. The incident highlighted how political tensions can overshadow sporting events. South African cricket legend AB de Villiers weighed in, strongly criticizing the decision.

AB de Villiers condemns politics in cricket during Asia Cup 2025 final between India and Pakistan

On his weekly #360 YouTube program, De Villiers emphasized the need to keep politics and sports separate, while also praising India’s T20 squad ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup. His comments have resonated widely across social media and cricketing circles.

“Team India sort of weren’t happy with who was handing out the trophy. I don’t feel that belongs in sport. Politics should stay aside. Sport is one thing, and it should be celebrated for what it is. Quite sad to see that, but hopefully they will sort things out in the future. It does put the sport, the players, the sportsmen, the cricketers in a very tough position, and that’s what I hate to see. It was quite awkward there at the end,” De Villiers said.

The former South African captain expressed disappointment that a prestigious cricket tournament ended with politics dominating headlines. According to him, players should not be placed in situations where external disputes interfere with their achievements. He stressed that moments like winning a trophy should be celebrated for the cricketing merit, not overshadowed by controversies. De Villiers reiterated that respecting the spirit of the game is crucial for cricket to thrive globally.

De Villiers’ praise for India’s T20I setup

While critical of the off-field saga, De Villiers lauded India’s on-field performance and preparation for future tournaments. De Villiers believes that such a talented group of cricketers could become a dominant force in T20 cricket, provided external controversies are kept at bay. His observations showcased the importance of strong team management, focus, and maintaining the sanctity of sport over politics. “Let’s focus on what’s most important, the cricket itself. India are looking really, really strong. Building up to that big T20 World Cup. Remember, it’s not too far away. And they look like they’ve got a lot of talent, and they play the big moments well. So fantastic to watch,” De Villiers concluded.
