Promising Young Woman and Together star Alison Brie has discussed her anticipation of appearing onscreen as supervillain Evil-Lyn in the upcoming adaptation of Mattel’s Masters of the Universe, written by Chris Butler, Aaron and Adam Nee, and David Callaham, with Travis Knight directing.
During a chat with USA Today, the star shared how her role in the Amazon MGM Studios feature was “unlike anything [she’s] ever really done.”
“I watched a bunch of the old cartoons, and she really is like a classic femme fatale character, but with a sense of humour,” Brie added.
Masters of the Universe comes in as the second cinematic re-telling of the sword and sorcery media franchise, focusing on He-Man (an alter-ego of Prince Adam) and his adventures on the planet Eternia, following Gary Goddard’s 1987 efforts, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as his archnemesis Skeletor.
The new film will feature Nicholas Galitzine as the sword-wielding superhero and Jared Leto as Skeletor. Additional cast members include Camila Mendes (Teela), Morena Baccarin (The Sorceress of Grayskull), James Purefoy (King Randor), Charlotte Riley (Queen Marlena), Kristen Wiig (voice of Roboto), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Fisto) and Idris Elba (Man-at-Arms).
The film’s official premise reads: “Fleeing a devastating civil war, ten-year-old Adam Glenn, Crown Prince of the planet Eternia, is spirited away to his mother’s home planet Earth, separating him from his ancestor’s Power Sword. Twenty years later, a now-adult Adam must return to his father’s home planet Eternia and rediscover his lost birthright, becoming He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, and leading the few remaining warriors of Eternia against the evil forces of Skeletor.”
Brie acknowledged how this role will differ from her regular comedy appearances as “a lot of the work that [she’s] done, everything is about reality.” The star concluded by explaining how a strong highlight of the upcoming film is that “is that everybody is larger than life − some people physically, this character more just in her evilness. It was so fun to work on, and the cast is great.”
Masters of the Universe is released on June 5th.
