The ongoing, AI-induced RAM shortage is causing prices to spike almost everywhere — smartphones, laptops, PCs, and even iPhones are facing supply issues. But some companies, like AMD, are promising to try to keep prices down.
AMD’s vice president of Ryzen, David McAfee, told Gizmodo in an interview that the company wants to keep GPU prices down, though it all comes down to how well it can manage the memory ecosystem and RAM price gouging.
“We have very strategic partnerships over many, many years with all the DRAM manufacturers to make sure that both the amount of supply that we need and the economics of what we’re able to buy from them are what we can support in our graphics business,” McAfee told Gizmodo.
Further, McAfee said AMD was working with its add-in card (AIC) partners to try to maintain prices. However, he also hedged, noting he can’t predict the future.
While maybe not the most confident statement, it’s at least a sliver of decent news for PC enthusiasts. If — and it’s a big if! — AMD can keep GPU prices down, it could make the company’s products a more favourable option, especially as Nvidia is reportedly slashing GPU production. Less production will mean fewer GPUs and, inevitably, higher prices for consumers.
Ultimately, the future remains uncertain, but all signs point to tech getting even more expensive in 2026, all thanks to AI.
