The 2026 Oscars were held in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, March 15. An American Idol judge took the stage at the event for a special reason. But all fans could focus on was their unrecognizable appearance. Keep reading to find out what they’re saying.
American Idol Judge Takes The Stage At 2026 Oscars
The three American Idol judges are well-established in the music industry. Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie have had celebrated careers. Carrie Underwood got her start on the reality competition two decades ago and continues to top the charts.
Lionel Richie received the special honor of attending and presenting at the 2026 Academy Awards. He took the stage to present the award for Best Original Song. Why? To mark 40 years since the singer won the award. Lionel Richie took home the Oscar in 1986 for “Say You, Say Me,” a song he wrote for the movie White Nights.
He returned to the stage four decades later to hand out the same award to “Golden” from the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
Fans Blast Them As Unrecognizable, Speculate Why
Lionel Richie has been a judge on American Idol for years, but he looked a little different. A Rejuvenation expert speculated to Daily Express that the singer may have had some work done.

“It looks as though he’s had fillers under his eyes and also fillers or fat injections in his cheeks and fillers or Botox in his forehead. Also to me personally it looks like those injections have affected his lymphatic circulation as his face looks fluidy to me. I don’t think it’s anything to do with a health condition,” they claimed.
Viewers took to social media to react to Lionel Richie’s appearance.
- “OMG!! Luv Lionel Ritchie BUT what did he do to his face???”
- “Botox face”
- “Lionel Richie is almost completely AI now”
- “I love Lionel Richie but he needs to cool it on the plastic surgery. His face is pulled back tighter than my budget until payday.”
- “Lionel Richie got his face snatched back to the 80’s to prepare for this!”
- “Lionel Richie looks like Kris Jenner”

Viewers Livid Over Memoriam Snubs
Lionel Richie’s unrecognizable appearance wasn’t the only Oscar moment that had viewers talking. From Lisa Rinna’s dress made from human hair to Michael B. Jordan taking home the Oscar for Best Actor, fans had something to say.
But the most chatter was about the 2026 Oscars In Memoriam segment that paid tribute to stars we’ve lost since last year’s Oscars. Barbra Streisand made a rare appearance to honor Robert Redford. However, several recent notable deaths were missing. Eric Dane, Hulk Hogan, and James Van Der Beek were among the snubs.
