Antony Starr to lead Breakers for Netflix.
Antony Starr, best known as Homelander in Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, has found his next big project. The popular star will lead Netflix’s newest drama series, Breakers.
Starr (The Covenant) leads as Brando in a series written by Pete Jackson (The Death of Bunny Monroe). A press release by Netflix detailed the premise of Breakers. “Two best friends go backpacking in Australia and are soon drawn into a seemingly perfect community of surfers led by a charismatic but mysterious figure.” Starr stands as the project’s sole cast member to date.
However, Netflix has announced the directors for Breakers. Mary Nighy (Say Nothing, Industry) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl) will direct. Gavin O’Grady (This Way Up), Petra Fried (Baby Reindeer) and Wim De Greef (Baby Reindeer) will executive produce. No release date is available as the project is in early production.
The actor has had a prominent rise in the last five years.
The project is a prominent next step for Starr, having risen to fame as the villain Homelander in The Boys. Despite being well-known now, the Kiwi actor, aged 50, was unknown to wider audiences before his breakout role. His work includes television appearances in small shows like Banshee, so Homelander has pushed Starr into the spotlight. The role comes at an important crossroads for Starr as his five-season tenure on The Boys comes to a close. It’s important to strike while the iron is hot as an actor. Starr can’t have found any job bigger in television than as a lead on a Netflix drama.
The series is produced by BBC Studios’ Clerkenwell Films in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia.
While details on Breakers are thin for now, we will keep you posted whenever new details regarding the series come to light. It is currently in production in Western Australia, so new information is sure to come soon.
