Apple’s iPhone and iPad now comply with NATO’s information assurance requirements, becoming the first consumer devices with this approval.
That means iPhones running iOS 26 and iPads running iPadOS 26 can be used with classified information up to the NATO restricted level.
Moreover, the devices can do so without needing special software or settings outside of using a device management service to supervise devices.
Additionally, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are now listed on NATO’s Information Assurance Product Catalogue. The catalogue highlights some of Apple’s security features, such as the Secure Enclave on Apple Silicon, used for encryption and protecting biometric data, Touch ID and Face ID, and Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE).
NATO approval comes after the German government approved the iPhone and iPad to handle classified government data following an evaluation by the Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, or BSI). The evaluation included technical assessments, comprehensive testing, and deep security analysis.
