Apple has been working on a new framework that is designed to simplify the transfer of third-party app data between iOS and Android devices.
Named the App Migration Kit, the new framework will be available to anyone with a compatible device running iOS or iPadOS 16.1 and later.
Like the OS systems mentioned, this new framework is currently in a beta stage. It has been noted that the framework will not be used to transfer data between iOS and iPadOS; rather, it will be used strictly between Apple devices and non-Apple devices, according to documentation regarding the new framework.
The documentation also states that developers can define whether their apps will import data, export data, or do both. As 9To5Mac points out, this is done through the creation of an app extension that conforms to the new protocol and at least one of the subprotocols.
That way, when the user decides to set up a new device, all of the apps that implement the new App Migration Kit will have their data included in the package. According to 9To5Mac, once the transfer is complete, the developer can then import data stored in the cloud onto the target device.
Alongside this new framework, Apple is also working on adding an option in settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone), which will be called Transfer to Android. Once the option is selected, a screen will show what can and cannot be transferred over during the migration process.
Since this is being developed as a more straightforward solution for transferring data between the two operating systems, Android is reportedly also developing a “Transfer to iPhone” feature. Now, there is an app developed by Apple, but this appears to be a built-in solution that works alongside Apple’s new framework.
