In a dramatic turn of events, Pakistan boycotted the pre-match press conference ahead of their Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash against India. The move, confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), comes amid mounting tension with match referee Andy Pycroft and ongoing fallout from the controversial handshake row.

Key reasons of Pakistan boycotting the pre-match presser ahead of India clash

Dispute with match referee Andy Pycroft

At the center of the storm is match referee Andy Pycroft. Pakistan had formally requested his removal following the heated group-stage encounter against India, where the lack of a post-match handshake sparked allegations of bias. Despite the PCB’s appeal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) reinstated Pycroft for the Super 4 clash, further inflaming tensions.

Handshake row fallout still haunts the tournament

The handshake controversy has become a flashpoint in the Asia Cup. Pakistan accused Pycroft of mishandling the situation, claiming unfair treatment toward their players. Official complaints were lodged with the ICC, but no disciplinary action was taken. The unresolved dispute continues to overshadow the on-field competition.

Pakistan avoids media scrutiny amid poor form

Another factor behind the boycott was Pakistan’s desire to avoid difficult media questions. With a string of losses against India and concerns over disciplinary matters, the PCB opted to sidestep uncomfortable press interactions. The move, however, has drawn criticism for breaching tournament media obligations.

Team morale under pressure despite motivational boost

Pakistan’s morale has been low following recent defeats and off-field controversies. In response, the PCB enlisted motivational speaker Dr. Raheel to boost the squad’s confidence ahead of the India clash. Despite this effort, the press conference snub signals ongoing internal challenges.

Pakistan’s previous boycott highlights repeated protocol breach

This is not the first time Pakistan has skipped its media commitments. Before their match against the UAE, the team also cancelled a press briefing, citing similar reasons. Such repeated violations risk sanctions from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the ICC.

While Pakistan avoided the media spotlight, India captain Suryakumar Yadav fulfilled his pre-match duties and fielded questions from journalists. His presence underscored a sharp contrast in approach between the two sides ahead of the marquee clash.

Boycott adds fuel to Indo-Pak rivalry

Pakistan’s boycott of pre-match presser has added yet another chapter to the storied rivalry versus India. Beyond cricketing tactics, the move highlights the psychological battles, governance disputes, and off-field drama that often define encounters between the two cricketing giants.
