Most mothers and fathers who work full-time say they sometimes parent while at work and vice versa. Most are upset to miss out on events with their kids, and many don’t have enough time to exercise. But moms and dads seem to have different perceptions on who does most of the chores, and mothers were more likely than fathers to say that having children made it harder to advance at work. Those are some of the findings about full-time working parents from a newly released Pew Research Center study, which surveyed 2,242 working parents between March 2-15. Here’s a look…

As the trade deadline draws nearer, teams are going to start shifting into the buyer or seller categories. The Giants are reportedly leaning towards the sell side. Their division rivals in Arizona are leaning the other way. “I’m planning on buying,” general manager Mike Hazen tells the Wolf & Luke show. It’s not really a shocking position for Hazen to take. Even struggling teams usually delay the decision to sell as long as possible. For the Snakes, their hopes of contending are still very much alive. They are 38-36, putting them 9.5 back of the Dodgers in the West division…
Jonathan David (Hossein Zohrevand, Wikimedia Commons) Team Canada has won its first game in the history of the FIFA World Cup. On Thursday, Canada trounced Qatar 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. To put the Canadian win into perspective, the FIFA World Cup began in 1930, and this was Canada’s first win in 96 years. With the win, Canada improved to a record of one win and one draw for four points. More importantly, Canada moved into first place in Group B. The Canadian hero on Thursday was Jonathan David of Ottawa, Ontario. David scored three times for…
CHICAGO (AP) — Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama surprised the first 100 visitors to walk through the doors of the new Obama Presidential Center, personally greeting them Friday. The Obamas, joined by former “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton, also read “Where the Wild Things Are” to 25 school children at the Chicago Public Library branch inside the center. When the former president read Maurice Sendak’s line about being “king of all the wild things,” Michelle Obama interjected with, “Although there were no kings,” to applause. Later, awed guests shook hands with the Obamas against the…
On Sunday afternoons around 4 p.m., I leave my home in the center of Guanajuato and stroll over to a nearby park called Embajadoras. The market there closes early for Sunday comida, but families are still hanging out, kids are shrieking, old ladies are chatting and the vendors are doing a healthy trade. This park, with its inviting benches, trees and shrubbery, is a classic example of a “third place,” a term coined by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989 in his book “The Great Good Place,” referring to spaces outside of home and work where people can gather at…
Luis Romo’s opportunistic goal and a wonder save by goalie Raúl Rangel were all Mexico needed to edge South Korea 1-0 on Thursday night, becoming the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup. In front of a raucous crowd at Guadalajara Stadium, El Tri survived late pressure from the South Koreans thanks to Rangel, whose quick reflexes in minute 88 prompted the BBC to ask the question: “How did he keep this out?” ¡TALAAA! ¡ATAJADÓN! ¡UN HÉROEEEE! 😱😱😱 Doble atajada de Tala Rangel. ¡Salva a México del gol! ¡Estás locoooo! #ElMundialEsNuestro y la magia de…
CALGARY — About 35 people rallied today at a Calgary hotel ballroom to formally launch a campaign to convince Albertans in an upcoming referendum that it’s time to quit Canada. The campaign is called “Let Alberta Decide.” Organizers promise it will be a serious, fact-based initiative to persuade people that Alberta has the workforce, the financial wherewithal, and the energy and agriculture resources to go it alone. The people behind it include Keith Wilson, a prominent separatist advocate who recently made a case for leaving Canada in debates with former Alberta premier Jason Kenney. Premier Danielle Smith has announced that…
OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada is allowing a lawsuit from a former politician against Alberta’s former top elections official to continue. Former legislature member Joe Anglin launched the suit in 2017, alleging the chief electoral officer interfered in his bid for re-election two years earlier. Anglin was elected in 2012 under the now defunct Wildrose Party banner, quit caucus two years later, and ran as an Independent candidate in 2015. During the election campaign that year, Elections Alberta investigated and fined Anglin for issues with his lawn signs and pamphlets, which included having sponsorship information printed too small.…
