Four years after returning to the superhero world of Marvel, notable director Sam Raimi has sad news for his Spider-Man fans. In a recent interview, Raimi came clean as to the silence surrounding the long-awaited Spider-Man 4. He confirms that the fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film will not happen.
Long before the formidable comic book character Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the genius director behind Evil Dead created the beloved Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. The films spanned over the years of 2002-2007. Raimi and Maguire’s third film did not entirely conclude Peter Parker’s story. A fourth film had been planned by the director, hoping to included Vulture and Mysterio as the villains. Sadly, due to creative setbacks and production delays, Raimi departed the franchise all together. This led to Sony then rebooting the franchise with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
14 years after Spider-Man 3 (2007), Raimi and Maguire teamed with Marvel Studios in projects Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), directed by Raimi, and the prior Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). With the two of them working with Marvel once more, this brought hope to their fans that the possibility of the fourth Maguire Spider-Man happening.
Unfortunately, in an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for Raimi’s latest film Send Help (2026), he brought bad news in regards to his Spider-Man films. In this interview, the director completely shut down the possibility of Spider-Man 4.
Of course Raimi being kindhearted expressed his love for the franchise and “the producers that make it,” while noting how Marvel Studios has made Spider-Man “better than ever”. His experience working on the Doctor Strange sequel most definitely brought about his admiration for what the Marvel Cinema Universe envisioned for the character. However, Raimi believes that the new path laid out for Spider-Man continues off screen, causing Maguire’s Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson to “have gone elsewhere”.
He also praised Tom Holland for immersing audiences “really into his story”. The director told ScreenRant that he believes that it wouldn’t “be right for me to go back and try and resurrect my version of this story.” With the projects he has worked on for Marvel and his future in his career, Raimi is happy to “pass the torch” and is “honoured to have” had it for one small section of Spider-Man history. Stan Lee created an honourable character in Peter Parker / Spider-Man. For Raimi to have been able to create his rendition of the character and its story, he will forever be honoured and grateful.
Though fans continue to hope for a continuation of Maguire’s Spider-Man, there is nothing in the future making this a possibility. Yes writer of The Batman: Part II, Mattson Tomlin, wishes to write the script for the fourth film, and actors Dunst and Sandman star Thomas Hayden Church have also expressed interest in returning. The franchise even confirmed Maguire’s Peter Parker is still out there with his return in No Way Home. Yet, with his ScreenRant interview, Sam Raimi appears to be content with where things are and has no wishes to continue with Spider-Man 4.
