Brian Austin Green’s “extremely tumultuous” separation from ex-fiancée Vanessa Marcil helped him do things differently after his split from ex-wife Megan Fox.
Green, 52, mentioned Marcil, 57, on the Tuesday, November 25, episode of the “Inside of You” podcast. The actress came up while the two actors were soap operas, with Green, who appeared on Knots Landing, giving the General Hospital legend some credit. “Vanessa, who lives right up the street. My first son, that is his mom. She was on General Hospital so she had to learn all these lines,” Green began.
When host Michael Rosenbaum asked Green if he gets “along with all of your exes,” he laughed before replying, “No.”
“Megan and I are great. She gets along with my fiancée [Sharna Burgess] amazingly and it is great. We just coparent well and we stay out of each other’s way,” he explained about Fox, 39, with whom he shares kids Noah, 13, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, 9. “And I realized early on, people separate for a reason.”
Green continued: “We are not going to all of a sudden just be great friends as we are coparenting. We stopped being together because we didn’t get along as well as we did when we first got together. Let’s take that expectation out of it and just resign to the fact that I only care about the health and wellness of my kids.”
His new outlook allowed Green and Fox to transition from exes to successful coparents.
“You are going to parent how you do and I am going to parent how I do. I wish her the best because she’s the mother of three of my kids,” he continued. “Also I know her so well, we started dating when she was 18 years old and we were together for 15 years. So I know her very, very well.”
While reflecting on his current relationship with his exes, Green admitted that things haven’t always been as civil with Marcil, adding, “I learned a lot from my previous relationship with Kassius’ mom.”
Green and Marcil dated from 1999 to 2003, during which time they welcomed son Kassius, now 23. The Beverly Hills, 90210 costars were even engaged at one point.
“It was a very tumultuous separation because you have this thing in your head of how you want to win. You want to be the smarter of the two and you want to be acknowledged for that. So you’ve got these unrealistic expectations and both of us did,” Green recalled on Tuesday. “It was extremely tumultuous.”
The actor went on to find love with Fox, with whom he tied the knot in 2010 and later welcomed three kids. They ultimately separated in 2020 before Green started dating Burgess, 40, who gave birth to their son, Zane, in 2022.
“When Megan and I first started dating and then the kids were born, we really made a decision at the point when we separated that we can’t keep this from affecting our kids,” he added. “But it’s up to us how it affects our kids. It’s going to — no matter what — it sucks for kids when the parents separate. It’s two houses but you either make it a great situation where they go, ‘Oh my God, we get two of everything now. This is unbelievable.’ Or you make it like each side talking s*** about the other parent. All of a sudden, there’s none of that.”
Green concluded: “Kassius is 23 now. So the last thing I want to do is have him deal with any sort of s***. Honestly I just stay as far away from that situation as I can with his mom and go, ‘OK, we started something poorly that just I don’t think will ever fix itself.’ Let’s just chalk it up to: it was a learning experience.”
