The question of whether “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie has become one of Hollywood’s most persistent holiday debates, resurfacing every December as fans dissect the film’s festive setting, seasonal soundtrack, and Christmas Eve storyline. The 1988 action classic, starring Bruce Willis as NYPD officer John McClane, has remained a cultural touchpoint for nearly four decades, sparking endless online debates, memes, and think pieces. Now, heading into the 2025 holiday season, the long-running discussion is louder than ever, and a new voice has jumped into the conversation, and it’s someone inside the Willis family.

While speaking about her family’s holiday traditions at the End Well 2025 conference, Emma Heming Willis weighed in on the discourse that fans never seem to tire of. She told PEOPLE, “I think it’s important to put ‘Die Hard’ on because it’s a Christmas movie.” The remark immediately made waves, not just because of the debate itself, but because Bruce Willis publicly took the opposite stance back in 2018 during his Comedy Central roast, declaring, “‘Die Hard’ is not a Christmas movie! It’s a goddamn Bruce Willis movie.”

Meanwhile, Bruce’s older daughters have never been shy about choosing a side. In 2023, Rumer Willis kicked off the conversation again when she shared a video to her Instagram Stories featuring her sisters Scout and Tallulah joining in. “I’ve collected all three Willis girls,” Rumer said while filming the trio in the car. Without hesitation, Scout jumped in: “It’s a f-cking Christmas movie. It takes place during Christmas.” Rumer quickly agreed, adding, “It’s a Christmas movie.”

But that’s not the first time the Willis family mentioned “Die Hard.” Back in 2020, Rumer Willis shared a touching childhood memory from the set of one of her father’s “Die Hard” films. The photo, posted to Instagram, showed a young Rumer gently touching noses with her dad as he stood in full John McClane mode, complete with cuts and scrapes from the iconic action role.

“Going through old photos and found this gem today….John McClane Forever,” she captioned the post, a sweet reminder of how intertwined the film is with their family history.

Part of what keeps the discourse alive is “Die Hard”’s unmistakable holiday framing. The movie opens with John McClane arriving at LAX on Christmas Eve with a gift in hand, heading straight to his estranged wife’s company Christmas party. Throughout the film, classic seasonal songs like “Winter Wonderland,” “Let It Snow,” “Christmas in Hollis,” and “Ode to Joy” set the soundtrack.

Still, despite the festive backdrop, viewers remain deeply split, and even Bruce Willis himself once shot down the Christmas-movie label. With Emma now claiming the opposite, the clash has become a new Willis family holiday subplot.

Beyond the film debate, Emma also discussed the reality of navigating the holiday season while caring for Bruce amid his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis. She described their celebrations as joyful but different, noting that they’ve adapted traditions to fit this chapter of their lives. “Bruce loved Christmas and we love celebrating it with him,” she told the outlet. “It just looks different, so we’ve kind of adapted to that.”

Emma and Bruce, married since 2009, share two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. Bruce is also father to Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah with ex-wife Demi Moore.

Bruce Willis’ family first revealed in 2022 that the actor had been diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate. The announcement explained why the “Die Hard” star stepped away from acting, as aphasia can impair speech, language processing, and comprehension.

By February 2023, Willis’ loved ones shared a more difficult update. His condition had progressed into frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a degenerative brain disease that impacts behavior, communication, and cognitive function. The diagnosis explained the rapid changes the family had witnessed and marked a new chapter in his care, one that his wife and his children have navigated together with openness and strength.

With Emma now firmly planting her flag on the “Christmas movie” side of the “Die Hard” debate, and Bruce forever on the other, it seems even the Willis household has accepted that this is one holiday argument destined to return year after year.

And for fans, it just might be the true Christmas tradition that never dies.
