During a sit-down with ScreenRant, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller has confirmed an upcoming collaboration with horror filmmaking royalty Clive Barker. Fuller directly stated a new project made with help from the Hellraiser creator, sharing:
“I’m collaborating with Clive Barker on a new television series that’s very exciting, and a dream come true from my childhood. It’s just a matter of time to bring them to life.”
The show creator also shared his other goal of “writing a script right now that hopefully will be my next directorial effort” and that “there is so much [he] wants to do”. Could the project be a secret Hellraiser TV series reboot/revival?
Meanwhile, Barker shared with Bloody Disgusting his newly planned route of horror creation in a 2024 interview.
“It’s time to focus entirely on writing. In the very room where I’m writing these words, I have the manuscripts for a very large number of projects (31 of them), some very close to completion, others still telling themselves,” the horror maestro addressed. “There are some wild projects in this collection of works, whether close to finished or done.”
He concluded: “There are also stories that you all knew I would be finishing. Abarat IV and V are amongst the books at my feet. So is the third and final book of The Art and the sequel to The Thief of Always.”
Barker directed the first Hellraiser film in 1987, which starred Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins and Ashley Laurence as a trio whose careless, immature love triangle results in the summoning of a merciless, sadistic demon called The Hell Priest (though pop culture cites him as Pinhead due to his appearance), played by Doug Bradley.
The original horror film grossed a box office total of $30 million and overcame divisive critical responses to become a textbook example of its type in a decade cited by many fans as the genre’s greatest and most creative. Hellraiser spawned nine sequels released throughout 1988 and 2018, as well as a re-telling in 2022 by director David Bruckner (v/h/s, The Ritual and The Night House).
Meanwhile, Fuller’s show Hannibal is the psychological thriller TV spin-off to the original Thomas Harris books, charting the killing and cannibalism of Hannibal Lecter, played by Mads Mikkelsen. Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne were the other leads in the series.
In his Bloody Disgusting interview, Barker also hinted at “return visits to characters and mythologies you may have thought [he] would never return to.”
“I hope I am still able to surprise you in the decades ahead,” he added. “And if you don’t see me at conventions, you’ll keep seeing new Clive Barker books being published, as well as some movie and television adaptations.”
Please be Hellraiser, please be Hellraiser, please be Hellraiser…
