The Hollywood Reporter reports that Taylor Sheridan will pen the script for the upcoming Call of Duty movie for Paramount before he moves to NBCUniversal. This also comes with the news that Peter Berg is set to direct the project as well as co-write and co-produce it alongside Sheridan.
Sheridan, who has seen great success with his TV work for Paramount+, will end his deal with the studio with this project, which is set to be his most high-profile one to date. The movie will also see David Glasser, Sheridan’s producer for his TV work, produce the feature adaptation under the 101 Studios banner.
This pairing seems like a match made in camo-laden heaven, as a lot of their work shares similarities that lend themselves perfectly to the Call of Duty franchise. Berg has previously helmed ‘based on real story’ projects such as Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, which stylistically capture the hyper-masculine intensity and suspense that a Call of Duty movie would need. On the other hand, Sheridan is responsible for writing projects like Sicario and Lioness that nail the military-focused stories and perspective that the game series is rooted in.
At this time, it is unclear what time period the movie would be set in. Over the years, the video game franchise has tackled settings such as World War 2, The Cold War, Vietnam, modern conflicts and even the future over roughly 23 instalments; there is no shortage of examples to refer to.
Berg and Sheridan, who are longtime friends, have teamed up before, as Berg served as producer on the movie Hell or High Water and Wind River, the latter of which Sheridan directed. This Call of Duty news comes after Sheridan’s announcement to leave Paramount for NBCUniversal. The decision stemmed from his unhappiness with the new Paramount-Skydance regime and his desire to make more movies than TV shows. His movie deal with NBCUniversal starts next year, meaning that, outside of Call of Duty, his next project in the director’s chair could happen sooner than you think.
