Shubman Gill reveals India’s ultimate goal
India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that the team’s biggest ambition now is to win the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking at the BCCI Naman Awards in Mumbai on March 15, Gill admitted that the thought of lifting the prestigious trophy often crosses his mind.
Reflecting on the narrow defeat in the 2023 final, Gill acknowledged that the team felt they were extremely close to achieving their dream. However, that disappointment has now transformed into motivation as they prepare for another shot at the title.
“Definitely, it does. That is the ultimate goal,” Gill said on Star Sports when asked whether he often thinks about the next ODI World Cup.
The Indian skipper further explained that the team still remembers how close they came to glory in the previous edition, which makes the upcoming tournament even more special.
“We felt like we were so close last time when we were here in the final in India. To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it’s going to be a great opportunity for us,” Gill added.
Gill also emphasized that representing the country on the biggest stage brings a special sense of responsibility and ambition.
“Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal so obviously, that is something that sometimes runs in my mind,” Gill added further.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in October and November and will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

If India manages to win the 2027 ODI World Cup, it could lead to a historic achievement in international cricket. The team already holds the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, and adding the 50-over crown would complete an unprecedented white-ball treble.
