Viewers recently saw Tony Dokoupil take on anchor duties for CBS Evening News. However, the move has not been without backlash. Recently, Megyn Kelly had a few choice words for Dokoupil in response to a certain moment that made headlines. So, what did she have to say? Keep reading for all of the details.
Tony Dokoupil Made His CBS Evening News Debut Earlier Than Expected
Many were introduced to Dokoupil through his work co-hosting CBS Mornings. He joined the network in 2016, previously working for NBC News and MSNBC.
However, Dokoupil recently took on a new role as the anchor of CBS Evening News with the start of the new year. Originally set to make his debut on January 5, 2026, fans saw him on the show a few days earlier as he covered current events in Venezuela.
As previously reported, viewers have also seen Dokoupil make an emotional admission. With the host visiting various cities through his “Live From America Tour,” Dokoupil was in tears during his first stop in Miami.
At the time, Dokoupil explained that he grew up in Florida, but had to leave at a young age due to trouble caused by his father selling drugs. Noting that he had family in the state, he got emotional when he noted how he would have liked to have spent his whole childhood in the area: “I feel like I was robbed of the full Miami experience.”
Megyn Kelly Thought Dokoupil’s Story Would Go In A Different Direction
On her namesake podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show, the former Fox News host discussed Dokoupil’s emotional moment. At the time, she was speaking with former ABC News journalist Mark Halperin.
Speaking with Halperin, Kelly felt that there shouldn’t be “crying in Evening News.” She was willing to make exceptions, such as the assassination of a president, as in Walter Cronkite’s tearful reaction to the shooting of President John F. Kennedy.
Kelly noted, “There was a wiping of the eyes when he took off the glasses to report that JFK had been shot and killed. That’s as far as he went. That’s as far as most Evening News anchors would ever have gone, traditionally.”
After playing a clip of Dokoupil, Kelly admitted that she expected his story about his family to go in a darker direction when considering his reaction. As she shared, “I thought for sure that story was going to end in, ‘And they were all killed in a house fire, I was the sole survivor,’ in which case I would’ve excused the multiple tears that preceded it. What is that?”
