Viewers recently saw Tony Dokoupil take over his new role on CBS Evening News. However, fans also recently saw an emotional moment from the anchor. Fans have also been sharing their reactions to the story.
Tony Dokoupil Has Had Quite A History Before Taking On His Role With CBS Evening News
Dokoupil recently became the anchor of CBS Evening News. Originally meant to make his debut on January 5, his first day actually occurred the previous Saturday to cover the United States strikes in Venezuela.
Prior to this, Dokoupil was known for co-hosting CBS Mornings. He also worked for NBC News, MSNBC, Newsweek, and The Daily Beast.
Dokoupil recently visited different cities as part of his “Live From America Tour.” During this time, he got emotional when reflecting on one of his favorite places in the world: Miami.
As he told CBS Miami, while back in the city, Dokoupil looked back on his childhood, musing on how everyone only gets one of those. As he explained, even as he began to have tears in his eyes, “Florida is where I grew up.”
Dokoupil also had a lot of family in the state. He continued, “My grandmother’s here, my father, my mother, my aunts and uncles, cousins, and it’s where I would have spent all of my childhood.”
However, the family’s time in Florida ended up getting cut short. As Dokoupil explained, “But we left because my father got in some trouble with business… We laugh about it now, but he was a drug dealer and he went to jail.”

Thanks to this, the anchor felt he was “robbed” of getting to grow up with the full “Miami experience.” As he explained, he wanted to grow up in the area for “the whole stretch.”
Dokoupil continued, “To have it and then to lose it, it just kind of rocks me. I didn’t expect to feel that, but whenever I’m here, it really does feel deeply like home, and I wish I could stay at home.”
Dokoupil’s Education & Career Have Taken Him To Various Places Throughout The United States
When he was six, Dokoupil and his mother, who worked as a teacher, later moved to Maryland. His later education would take him to other parts of the country, including George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and Columbia University in New York City.
During his recent “Live From America Tour,” Dokoupil will visit ten cities. In addition to Miami, other cities include Doral, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, and San Francisco.
With Dokoupil’s recent return to Miami, fans have also been sharing their responses to his emotional share on social media. A few Miamians even joined the conversation. Some comments included:
- “There is no place like Miami! [Sun’s] the best.”
