Former CFL defensive lineman Alex Bazzie is no longer facing charges for breaking and entering stemming from an alleged 2024 incident after they were dismissed without prejudice.
According to documents obtained by 3DownNation, Judge Maryclaire Akers of the Circuit Court of Kanawha County, W.V., delivered the order on March 18, 2025. It was made pursuant to Rule 48 of the West Virginia Rules of Criminal Procedure, which states that an unnecessary delay of more than one year in presenting the charge to a grand jury must result in dismissal by the court.
Bazzie was arrested in Charleston, W.V. in January 2024 after he was accused of using a pickaxe and a tire iron to pry open the drive-thru ATM at the United Bank in Kanawha County. No money was taken, as police claimed he was able open the exterior of the machine but failed to access the safe inside. Those allegations were never proven in court.
3DownNation has reached out to the Office of the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney for comment.
At the time of his arrest, Bazzie was on the coaching staff at the University of Charleston. He was removed from his position after charges were filed.
The Silver Springs, Md. native, Bazzie played seven seasons in the CFL, five with the B.C. Lions. After arriving in Vancouver in 2014, the six-foot-one, 228-pound edge rusher racked up 29 sacks over his first three seasons, including a career-high 11 in 2016 to earn a West Division all-star selection and a shot in the NFL.
After stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals, Bazzie returned to the Lions for the final six games of the 2017 season. He would join the Edmonton Elks in free agency the following offseason and spent two seasons there, before signing with the Toronto Argonauts ahead of the cancelled 2020 campaign. He wrapped up his playing career with a final stop in B.C. in 2021.
In 80 CFL games, Bazzie recorded 159 defensive tackles, 21 special teams tackles, 43 sacks and two forced fumbles.
