Entertainment reporter Jake Hamilton took to X to confirm Christian Bale stated he will star with Leonardo DiCaprio in Heat 2, the new film from Michael Mann, the director of the original and based on his book of the same name.
“I’ll be back in Chicago soon for HEAT 2”, American Psycho star Bale reportedly told Hamilton.
DiCaprio was confirmed to be starring in the prequel in December 2025.
The film will be a sequel and prequel to the original 1995 film by director Michael Mann. It featured Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as a career thief and a Robbery Homicide detective, respectively, with a focus on their professional and private lives. Additional cast members included Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight and Val Kilmer.
Heat was a huge success, going on to become one of the greatest crime films ever made. It also grossed $187.4 million against its $60 million budget. The film has an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 154 reviews. It also has an 8.3/10 score on IMDb.
Heat 2 was confirmed to be in development in the summer of 2022 by Mann. When asked if original cast members would return, he replied, “I love those guys. But they’d have to be six years younger than they were in Heat.”
The sequel will be an adaptation of the 2022 book of the same title by Mann and will take place before the events of the first film, with a reported budget of $150 million. It has also been reported that filming will primarily take place in Chicago. Adam Driver, Stephen Graham, Bradley Cooper and Austin Butler have been rumoured for roles in the film, but so far only Graham seems to reportedly have a “concrete” offer.
A current IMDb summary reads: “1988, Chicago: McCauley and his gang carry out robberies on the West Coast and the Mexico-USA border. Detective Hanna kills McCauley in a confrontation at LAX. Years later, in LA, Hanna hunts down Chris Shiherlis, the group’s last survivor.”
