Real Madrid go to Benfica tonight in the Champions League. Get all the team news here…

Real Madrid are back in Lisbon tonight, just three weeks on from one of the most humbling nights in their recent history.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side face Benfica and will look to avenge the 4-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Jose Mourinho and Anatoliy Trubin on January 28.

Madrid arrived in Portugal sitting nicely in the top eight and eyeing a place in the Champions League round of 16 without the need to navigate the play-offs. But their hopes unfolded on a dramatic night that concluded with home goalkeeper Trubin ordered forward for a last-gasp free-kick and with Benfica needing one more goal to remain in the competition.

The Ukraine international duly headed in Fredrik Aursnes’ superb delivery to spark scenes of delirium at the Estádio da Luz and heap further embarrassment on a Madrid team knocked out of the Copa del Rey at second tier Albacete two weeks earlier.

A 3-2 loss would not have been enough for Madrid to qualify automatically but the optics of conceding to a goalkeeper was not a good look, as Kylian Mbappe confirmed.

“That last goal doesn’t change anything in terms of the result, but for us it looks shameful. Conceding from the goalkeeper hurts,” said the France international.

“We were lacking a little bit of everything – aggression, concentration and quality of play. There are no small things in the Champions League: if you don’t go out on the pitch at your best, you get punished.”

Since that point, things have looked up for Madrid with three successive wins in La Liga taking them above Barcelona in the title race.

Benfica have won their last two Primeira Liga games but performances continue to be unconvincing and this is as big a night for Mourinho as it is Arbeloa.
