‘Craziest’ Reason Sofia Vergara Missed Out on the 2025 Emmys

Sofia Vergara tragically had to miss one of the biggest award ceremonies of the year, the 2025 Emmy Awards, due to an unexpected allergic reaction that sent her to the emergency room. 

The 53-year-old actress took to Instagram to share a picture of the affected eye while explaining why she had to opt out of attending the event at the last minute. 

Vergara recently underwent a second surgery on her knee to improve its function, mobility, and overall physical appearance. 

Rather than be at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Vergara shared a three-slide media carousel on Instagram, detailing her unexpected visit to the hospital.

In the first picture, the actress was captured wearing a full face of makeup. However, the affected eye appeared red and swollen. 

“Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER. Sorry, I had to cancel! Craziest eye [allergy] right before getting in the car,” she wrote. 

In the second slide, the “Modern Family” actress was lying on a hospital bed while wearing a black shirt and a pair of jeans. She was captured folding her hands with her eyes closed, obviously in pain.  Vergara also tried to find some relief by rinsing her eye in the eye wash sink at the hospital. 

The “Griselda” star was scheduled to present an award at the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which was held on Sunday, September 14.

Vergara’s comment section was filled with thousands of comments from fans and celebrities expressing concern about the incident.  The actress’s “America’s Got Talent” co-stars, Terry Crews and Heidi Klum, also sent their love to her. 

“Oh no! Get well soon! [fire and red heart emoji],” Crews wrote.  “What the f….” a concerned Klum commented. 

Fans also expressed concern over the unfortunate incident, with some suggesting that her makeup artist may have been to blame. 

“Prayers for a speedy recovery. Eye issues are so painful,” one fan wrote, while another suggested, “Your makeup person did you wrong.”

Another similar remark read, “If the makeup was purple, it might contain eggplant, which causes an allergic reaction,” while this user added, “Sorry, baby girl! That looks painful!”

Vergara’s eye allergy is not the first thing that has sent her to the hospital this year. 

In July, The Blast reported that the actress went under the knife for some knee-related issues.  Vergara shared a picture on Instagram showing the affected knee, still wrapped in braces and covered in bandages.

She was pictured lying on what appeared to be a hospital bed while wearing a hospital gown. She wrote in the caption, “It’s done! Round 2 #knee.” 

The “Modern Family” star first underwent knee surgery in 2024. After the procedure was completed, she publicly appreciated her then-partner, Dr. Justin Saliman, for supporting her both emotionally and professionally. 

A source said that the NFL star and the actress were flirty, and the former specifically asked to “switch seats to sit next to her” during one of the formal dinners onboard.

They were also surrounded by big names such as Colman Domingo, Naomi Campbell, Martha Stewart, and Kendall Jenner.  The source also described their connection as a “summer romance.” 

Vergara did not acknowledge the romance rumors between her and Brady. However, she recently opened up about getting more comfortable taking time off her busy schedule as a Hollywood actress. 

“I think I am getting better at taking my time off. I think I have worked hard enough my whole life that I am finally beginning to let myself enjoy my vacations and say I’m taking time off,” she said, as reported by The Blast.

The Primetime Emmy Award nominee acknowledged that actors can sometimes be “scared” to take time off for fear of missing their moment. However, she is determined to spend more time with Amore, her adorable Chihuahua, her son Manolo, and her other loved ones.
