Horror writer and director Damien Leone has posted his clarification about the progress of the fourth film in the popular yet divisive gory Terrifier franchise on social media, following reported false claims about the film’s plot and filming progress.
Beginning with short films released from 2008 to 2013, Terrifier was released in 2016 and focused on Art the Clown’s Halloween killing spree. The film gained attention from its beginnings as a crowdfunding project, which went on to make great use of its small budget with shocking kills and a terrifying horror villain.
A sequel was then released in 2022 and relied heavily on the marketing of reports that audience members were rushing from the cinema sick and disgusted by the film’s excessive, physics-defying kills. The second film also kick-started a new storyline unrelated to the first film, which sees Final Girl Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVena) terrorised by Art the Clown as he slaughters her family and peers. It is soon implied that Shaw holds a psychic connection to Art.
A third film followed in 2024 and was set over the Christmas period, progressing Shaw’s relationship with Art as she struggles to overcome the trauma of the last film’s events. Meanwhile, her clown arch nemesis attempts to top his kills from the first two films.
Early last year, Leon confirmed the fourth film will see Art’s conclusion.
Leone began his clear-up by stating, “Since there’s so much Terrifier 4 speculation and false information out there, I wanted to drop in and give an official update.”
“The script is very close to completion, and I’m hoping to begin pre-production this Spring. This is the most precious script I’ve written for many reasons, but it’s also the most challenging,” the director added. “There’s a lot of material to tackle and a lot riding on this one, not just creatively but emotionally.”
Leone then took a moment to acknowledge how he and his crew have “built something special together over the years”, praising how “the cast and crew who have been here since the beginning deserve a finale that honors their dedication, and the fans who’ve championed this franchise deserve something unforgettable.”
“In all honesty, I’m thrilled with the way it’s turning out and confident it will deliver. I will officially announce when the script is complete on my social media pages, which also means we’ll be moving into pre-production,” he concludes. “If you don’t see it coming from or confirmed by me, then it’s not official. I promise it will be worth the wait!”
The Terrifier films also star David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown. The killer was initially played by Mike Giannilli in his short film era.
