England’s Danni Wyatt-Hodge produced a stunning match-winning performance in a high-octane Women’s Big Bash League clash, guiding Hobart Hurricanes to a famous victory. Chasing a tall target of 182 against Sydney Thunder in Brisbane, Wyatt-Hodge delivered a commanding knock of 90 off just 52 deliveries. Her innings came at a time when Hurricanes had lost early wickets and required rebuilding with urgency and control. Alongside Nicola Carey, she turned a tricky situation into one of the most memorable chases in the competition. The match remained tense until the very final over, keeping both teams and the crowd on edge. In the end, the Hurricanes held their nerve to seal a six-wicket victory with three balls to spare.

WBBL|11: Wyatt-Hodge and Nicola Carey’s crucial partnership sets up the chase for Hobart Hurricanes

Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s innings was the defining factor in Hurricanes’ successful chase, especially given the pressure early on when the side was struggling at 27/2 with Nat Sciver-Brunt dismissed cheaply. Wyatt-Hodge displayed superb shot selection, rotating strike flawlessly and punishing loose deliveries with precision, hitting nine fours and three sixes.

Her third-wicket partnership with Carey worth 143 runs completely shifted the momentum of the match. Carey played a composed anchor role, staying unbeaten on 58 from 43 balls, guiding the innings with maturity. The dismissal of Wyatt-Hodge in the 18th over, caught by Heather Knight off Sam Bates, momentarily brought the game back into balance as Hurricanes still needed 12 runs off 16 balls. Heather Graham struck two boundaries immediately to ease the pressure but fell in the penultimate over to Shabnim Ismail, who bowled brilliantly to concede just one run. With three needed off the last over, Carey and Elyse Villani kept their composure to complete the chase with three balls remaining, sealing a thrilling finish.

WBBL|11: Sydney Thunder’s competitive total and bowling efforts fall just short

The Thunder had earlier posted a competitive total of 181/8, built on useful contributions across their batting lineup rather than a single dominant innings. Knight impressed with a top score of 39 off 31 balls, showing smart placement and well-timed strokes. Chamari Athapaththu provided early impetus with a brisk 32 from 22 deliveries, while Tahlia Wilson (22 off 23) and Laura Harris (20 off just seven balls) helped lift the scoring rate in key phases.

For the Hurricanes, Hayley Silver-Holmes delivered the most impressive figures of the innings with 2/27 from three overs, maintaining discipline in favorable conditions for batting. England’s Linsey Smith struggled, conceding 46 runs in her four overs, which offered Thunder scoring opportunities. Despite Thunder’s bowlers fighting back in the final overs, especially Ismail’s outstanding second-last over, the inability to take the key wicket of Carey late in the game proved decisive. The Hurricanes’ chase will be remembered as one of the standout batting efforts of the season, built on composure under pressure and clarity of execution.
