We have two more days left at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo, Canada is at 17 medals (four gold medals, five silver medals and eight bronze medals). They are in 10th place in the overall medal standings. Here is what Sunday has in store.
Aerials
China is the heavy favourite to win gold here, but Canada is definitely in the conversation to win a medal (3:45 AM MT). Canada won bronze in the event at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, while Marion Thenault of Sherbrooke, Quebec just missed making the women’s aerials finals and Lewis Irving of Quebec City, Quebec just missed making the men’s aerials finals. They both finished in seventh place.
Men’s Ski Cross
Canada has another chance of earning a medal in freestyle skiing on Saturday. This time it is from Reece Howden of Chilliwack, British Columbia, who has been first in the World Cup men ‘s ski cross circuit the last two years. Kevin Drury of Toronto, Ontario and Jared Schmidt of Ottawa, Ontario are both in the medal conversation. Drury won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and has won 19 World Cup ski cross medals. Schmidt has won six World Cup medals.
Curling
Two Canadian teams are playing for medals today. Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario is playing for bronze (6am MT) against the United States and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario’s Brad Jacobs is playing for gold (11am MT) against Great Britain. The Americans have never won an Olympic curling medal in the women’s event. When Jacobs won the gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, he beat Great Britain’s David Murdoch in the final by a score of 9-3. Murdoch is the current Curling Canada High Performance Director.
Speed Skating
The women’s mass start takes place on Saturday (9:15 am MT). Ivanie Blondin of Ottawa is a gold medal contender. She is the reigning Olympic bronze medalist, two-time gold medalist at the World Championships and ranked third in the world. Meanwhile, Valerie Maltais of La Baie, Quebec is ranked fourth.
Women’s Halfpipe Skiing
Cassie Sharpe of Calgary, Alberta, Amy Fraser of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Rachael Karker of Guelph, Ontario have qualified for the final. Sharpe is questionable after falling in qualifications. Karker won Olympic bronze in Beijing. The final is at 11:30 am MT.
