DCU fans have flooded X with posts on their dissatisfaction with the recent update on the upcoming Batman film, titled The Brave and the Bold, about screenwriter Christina Hodson being confirmed to pen the project.
The news of Hodson joining the film broke across numerous outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter. The site stated: “One source said the scribe had been working on the project since at least the fall. Another source said that it would be some time before a definitive draft comes in as the studio is taking a measured approach to its development.”
Fans of the caped crusader have not taken well to the news, with X posts of pleas for 2022’s The Batman director Matt Reeves to come and “save [them] all” and “DCU fans” will have to “force themselves into liking the latest DCU update”.
Dismay towards Hodson’s name credited as screenwriter stems from responses and verdicts to her previous work on the iconic comic book film universe-building. This includes 2020’s Birds of Prey, featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in her own spin-off feature. Despite fan anticipation, this film failed to hit its box office target, making $205.5 million worldwide, which was $94.2 million less than the target of $300 million.
Additionally, Hodson’s work on 2023’s The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, gained mixed to negative reviews due to unsatisfying final acts and visual effects. The film was also a box office bomb, grossing $200-220 million against a $271.4 million budget, and helped to kickstart a spell of superhero fatigue.
