In the 191st edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow” by Dean Martin.
The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 191st edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow” performed by Dean Martin.
“Oh, the weather outside is frightful / But the fire is so delightful / And since we’ve no place to go / Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”
❄️ Right on, Dean Martin (1917 – 1995)! “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” is one of my favorite Christmas/holiday classics. It’s simple, innocent, and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, despite the coldness! Jule Styne (1905–1994) and Sammy Cahn (1913–1993) penned this standard, which has been covered by everybody and their brother, sister, and cousin! However, one of the best versions of this snowy gem is by Martin. It is the second track from his 1959 album, A Winter Romance.
Gus Levene (1911 – 1979) conducts the accompanying orchestra on “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”. “Snow” features marvelous, colorful orchestration, with playful woodwinds, lush strings, and a tight rhythm section. Overall, the sounds are decadent and tasteful, yet not too much. There are ample moments in the brief, sub-two-minute cut where the music shines. Of course, the star of the show is Dean Martin. He excels with his easy-going, highly sophisticated vocals. Martin sounds like he never breaks a sweat, yet delivers an incredibly potent, punchy performance. No in-depth analysis is necessary when it comes to “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”. Dean Martin delivers a remarkable, well-rounded performance that continues to stand the test of time nearly seven decades later.
