Dog Allegedly Fires Shotgun, Leaving Owner Seriously Injured
According to the Shillington Police Department, a 53-year-old man is recovering in the hospital after his dog allegedly discharged a shotgun that struck him in the lower back. The bizarre incident happened around 11:13 p.m. Tuesday, after authorities received reports of a shooting at the man’s residence. When officers arrived, they found the victim conscious on the floor, but clearly in serious pain.

Police say the man had been cleaning his shotgun earlier that night and placed it on his bed afterward. As he sat down, one of his dogs reportedly jumped onto the bed, setting off the weapon and causing it to fire directly into his back. The man and his son were the only people home at the time, along with two additional dogs — but officials confirmed the son wasn’t in the room when the shot went off.
“While they were responding, they were informed that a dog had jumped up onto the bed causing the shotgun to go off, which ultimately struck the male,” Shillington Police Cpl. Michael Schoone shared. He added, “He’s not sure what stage of cleaning he was in at the time, so it’s unsure if the dog’s paw may have gotten caught inside the trigger and the safety was off or if there was some sort of manufacturer malfunction. That’s unknown at this time.”
Victim Undergoes Surgery As Investigation Continues
Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he immediately underwent surgery. According to medical staff, he will require at least one more operation to treat his injuries. As of Thursday, police told ABC News that his current condition has not yet been released.
