According to co-star Jack Black, Donald Glover apparently “campaigned for the role” of Nintendo’s beloved dinosaur Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Black, who reprises his role as Bowser in the animated sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, said to ExtraTV in a recent interview, “It’s kind of a cool thing. We got lucky that we got Brie, who crushes it and loves the Nintendo universe. And also Donald, who campaigned for the role… He told his agent, ‘Call [Illumination CEO] Chris Meledandri. Tell him I really want to be Yoshi, I’d love to be in the new Super Mario Bros., because he loves it, and he loves that universe.”
Glover’s wish came true, and he’s now part of the all-star cast which includes Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), Brie Larson (Princess Rosalina), Issa Rae (Honey Queen), Glen Powell (Fox McCloud), Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.), and Luis Guzmán (Wart).
However, Glover admits he started off “a little timid” taking on the role. He told ExtraTV, “I was like, ‘OK, how am I gonna do this? These guys did such a great job on the first one. And that’s a hard thing to do. It’s a very iconic movie and character. I always believed in the idea of under-promising, over-delivering, and was like, ‘I’ll just study really hard, and hopefully I’ll be beloved like them.’”
