Mohamed Salah should join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia, rather than go to MLS

Mohamed Salah has been warned off a move to Major League Soccer as he ponders his next club.

Salah announced last week that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season after nine trophy-laden years at Anfield.

His next destination remains a mystery with a host of clubs in Europe and further afield chasing the Egypt international. A switch to the Saudi Pro League remains the most likely outcome although Inter Miami have also been linked with a move for the 33-year-old, who has scored 255 goals in 435 games for Liverpool.

A transfer to MLS would not be the right decision, however, according to Egypt’s national team director Ibrahim Hassan, who says Salah would fade into obscurity, just like Lionel Messi.

“Personally, I would prefer him to stay in Europe,” Hassan told On Sports. “I have heard about offers from Paris Saint‑Germain, Bayern Munich and clubs in the Italian league.

“A move to Major League Soccer? He would be far too out of the spotlight. You won’t remember Salah any more than I remember [Lionel] Messi now, I don’t even try to watch him.”

Move to Saudi instead and join Ronaldo, says Hassan

Hassan, who is the twin brother of Egypt coach Hossam Hassan, would much rather Salah went to Saudi Arabia, adding: “If he does not receive offers from Europe, then a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names such as Cristiano [Ronaldo].”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes leaving Europe’s top leagues would be a mistake for Salah.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Carragher said: “I think Mo Salah, the way he’s driven like a Ronaldo, I don’t see the Saudi thing just yet. I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career’s over when you go there [Saudi Arabia]. I think he’ll still be looking at his Champions League record or how many goals he can get.

“I still think he thinks, ‘I’m still one of the best players, and me leaving now is not the end of my top-level career, I’ve still got something to give’.”

Salah is currently sidelined with an injury and missed Egypt’s friendly win over Saudi Arabia on Friday.

He is expected to return when Liverpool face Manchester City in the FA Cup at the weekend.
