Kevin Williamson has revealed he made multiple attempts to bring Emma Roberts back for a cameo in Scream 7.
Williamson, who wrote Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4 and directed the franchise’s latest installment, said he “desperately wanted” Roberts to reprise her role as Jill Roberts, Scream 4’s surprise antagonist.
“Since it was Sidney-related, I felt like one through four needed to be represented,” he explained to Happy Horror Time. “I asked her like three times… but the schedule or something didn’t work. It just didn’t work out for her.”
Roberts’ character was killed off at the end of Scream 4, but Williamson previously shared he had planned for Jill to survive and lead a new trilogy. In that version, the character would have reinvented herself as a high-profile survivor while secretly being a killer, before being targeted herself by a new Ghostface.
Scream 7 features appearances from past Ghostface killers, including Stu Macher, Roman Bridger and Nancy Loomis, appearing through in-universe video recordings. Actors Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and Laurie Metcalf returned to film new material. Williamson also confirmed that Timothy Olyphant was approached to reprise his Scream 2 role as Mickey Altieri, but was unavailable.
Neve Campbell, Isabel May, Jasmine Savoy-Brown, Mason Gooding, Joel McHale, Anna Camp, McKenna Grace and Courtney Cox star in the latest entry. The new film is now the highest-grossing entry into the franchise worldwide, with over $177million grossed, and will also be the highest-grossing in the US in the next few days.
Scream 7 is in cinemas now.
