If you need a new phone plan we always recommend trying to own your phone so you can take advantage of BYOD (bring your own device) deals. The latest discounts from Fido are a great illustration of that point.
While not the best plan we’ve seen lately (Public and Freedom are hard to beat) the latest discounts at Fido offer 10GB of bonus data. The plan are as following;
- $40 – 20GB, unlimited Canada calling/testing, 500 international texts.
- $45 – 50GB, unlimited Canada calling/testing, 500 international texts.
- $50 – 70GB, unlimited Canada calling/testing, 500 international texts.
All of these plans come with a promotion that lets you get access to your hotspot feature for free. However, I think Fido charging for this feature to begin with sets a bad precedent so I wouldn’t buy any plans from them for that reason. Beyond that, I don’t think anyone should really upgrade their plans right now. Black Friday is right around the corner and instead of seeing extra data you might not use, you’re more likely to see real price drops. I’d wait until then, but if you can’t, here are some other options.
Koodo is offer a promotion that can also net you an extra 10GB of data on top of the normal amounts, but its hidden this option as one of its Free* Perks. Picking the extra data will mean you can’t pick unlimited long distance, rollover data or premium voicemail among a few other options.
Virgin Plus also offers 10GB of bonus data (weird how they’re all the same 🙄). Annoyingly, Virgin Plus still caps its video streaming to 480p. However, reports from Virgin members online claim that you can get around it with a VPN and it applies differently across various services. One user mentioned for instance that they are able to steam YouTube in 720p. Either way this seems like a hassle, so we don’t really recommend it either.
While you need to live in a Freedom Coverage zone to be able to stay on one of its plans long term, if you can get on the deals are a little better. The cheapest plan is $39 and includes 60GB of data that you can use all over Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. This also comes with a one-time allotment of 5G that can be used in over 120 popular travel destinations. If you need more data (what are you doing that needs that much? let me know on Threads) there are better plans that range up to 200GB that cost $69. There is also a $34 plan with 10GB that’s probably good for most users.
