Fido, Virgin Plus match Koodo’s improved Black Friday plans

Fido and Virgin Plus have rolled out improved Black Friday wireless bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) plans that match the offers Koodo launched last week.

Over the weekend, Rogers-owned Fido made the following changes, effectively dropping prices for some plans by $10/mo:

    • $40/50GB 4G with unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, and 500 international texts (previously $50/50GB).
    • $45/70GB 4G with unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, and 1,000 international texts (previously $55/70GB).

The new plans include 10GB of bonus data and a $15/mo discount ($5 for autopay and another $10/mo promo discount). You can also get hotspot access for free, though it’s worth noting Fido used to offer free hotspot by default on plans until it turned the feature into a paid add-on earlier this year.

Bell-owned Virgin Plus made similar changes with its plans:

    • $40/50GB 4G with unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting (previously $50/50GB).
    • $45/70GB 4G with unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting (previously $55/70GB).

Like Fido, Virgin’s plans include a 10GB data bonus and a $10/mo autopay credit. However, unlike Fido, customers get hotspot capabilities included in the plan.

While the improved plans are great to see, it’s worth pointing out that neither Fido nor Virgin offers the best plan value. I’d put Koodo’s plans slightly ahead, since you get faster 5G data (up to 250Mbps) with Koodo instead of 4G speeds (capped to 150Mbps) from the other two.

Looking beyond Koodo, Virgin, and Fido, there are even better value options out there. If you live in an area where you can get Freedom Mobile service, you can get options like the $39/60GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan — that’s more data and included roaming for nearly the same price. Telus-owned Public Mobile also has some decent BYOP plans if Freedom won’t work for you.

Ultimately, the $40/50GB plans are a step in the right direction, but unfortunately, the Black Friday deals still aren’t good yet. Hopefully, that changes later this week.
