A24 have unleashed a teasing first look trailer for the upcoming and highly anticipated horror Backrooms, which will centre on the internet rabbit hole of the same name and will be directed by newcomer Kane Parsons.
20-year-old Parsons began his career as a YouTuber over a decade ago, focusing on internet urban myths and creepy content. His channel has currently obtained 2.78 million subscribers and a rough total of 900k views per video. The YouTuber began his work on the Backrooms, which originated on 4chan as a Creepypasta in 2019, in 2022. He released a short film on the topic after seeing the original image, only expecting it to remain as a stand alone project.
After a burst in popularity, a series of 23 segments was soon uploaded. The original video now has 71 million views. The phenomenon can be explained as an eerie liminal space outside of reality.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell are all confirmed to be appearing in the film, whilst filmmakers like James Wan, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Chris Ferguson, and Michael Clear all receive producer credits.
“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in,” the original 4chan post reads. “God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.”
A feature film version was announced in 2023 with Will Soodik and Roberto Patino working as screenwriters.
The official synopsis reads: “After a therapist’s patient goes missing into a dimension beyond reality, she has to enter the unknown to save him.”
Backrooms is due for a cinematic release on 29th May, 2026.
