Bleecker Street have just dropped the trailer for Amy Wang’s Slanted, which you can watch below!
This will be the sci-fi body horror starring Shirley Chen, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and McKenna Grace. Vivian Wu, Amelie Zilber, Fang Du, Elaine Hendrix, and R. Keith Harris also appear in the satirical horror.
The plot reads: “An insecure Chinese-American teenager undergoes experimental surgery to appear white, hoping to secure the prom queen title and peer acceptance.”
Wang’s take on the body-horror, feminist hybrid (seen before in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance and Emile Blickfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister) combines with a critique of racially charged beauty standards. It premiered at last year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, where it was awarded the Narrative Grand Jury Prize.
Synopsis:
Joan Huang idolises the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls. Enter Ethnos: a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that makes people of colour appear white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost? Blending sharp satire, sci-fi, and body horror, and starring Shirley Chen (Dìdi), McKenna Grace (Regretting You), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), Slanted proves that identity is never only skin-deep.
Slanted is set for US cinemas on March 13th. A UK release date is TBC.
