A wooden coastal walkway connecting two cliffs outside the northern Spanish city of Santander collapsed on Tuesday killing five young people and leaving one missing, authorities said.
Spain’s maritime rescue service said on X that the victims fell into the sea at the rocky beach of El Bocal, with five bodies recovered, one missing and one person rescued.
“They had walked on a wooden footbridge that linked two small cliffs and that footbridge collapsed,” Santander’s mayor Gema Igual told reporters at the scene.
“A group of seven youngsters who had come to enjoy nature found themselves in this accident,” she said, confirming the number of dead and missing.
The seventh person was in hospital with “apparent hypothermia”, Igual added.
According to the Spanish press, the group included six young females and one young male, all of them students at a local vocational training centre.
