Life after James Bond is starting to take shape for former producer, Barbara Broccoli. Deadline are reporting Broccoli’s EON Productions is set to produce a new adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Othello.
The report also states production for the film will take place in Doha the capital of Qatar , with things set to kick-off in Autumn 2026. It’s set to star David Oyelowo, Rachel Brosnahan and Cynthia Erivo, with Oyelowo set to direct the film.
The production of the film will also involve Oyelowo for Yoruba Saxon. Qatar’s Doha-based Katara Studios, which is co-financing the feature, hence Broccoli announcing the project in the city.
David Oyelowo is no stranger to William Shakespeare and Othello especially. In 2016 he appeared in Sam Gold‘s stage version in New York. Playing the titular role, with Daniel Craig playing the role of Lago and at this stage there is no word if Craig will return for the screen version.
Gold’s stage version will inspire this project transporting the viewer from 17th Century Venice Italy to modern day warfare in Iraq. Brosnahan also appeared the same stage production playing Desdemona and she is set to reprise the role on the big screen. It’s understood Erivo will play Emilia, Desdemona’s maid.
Oyelowo also appeared at the event in Doha commenting on the project – “Our cinematic version of ‘Othello’ is bitingly modern and fearlessly ambitious. To have a real shot at that, you need fearless actors. Cynthia is not only a generational talent but a dear friend with whom I am always keen to collaborate, and Rachel was a dream to play opposite in our original stage production and has been an inspiring pillar to build around for our fresh take on this legendary tale.”
