The University of Nebraska has promoted former CFL kicker Brett Maher to the role of special teams coordinator.

The 36-year-old joined the Cornhuskers as a part-time special teams consultant in 2024 and served as the full-time special teams assistant last season. He graduated from Nebraska as a player, where he was a two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year and one-time Punter of the Year.

Maher spent four seasons in the CFL as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2014), Ottawa Redblacks (2014-15, 2017) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2016). He made 107-of-137 field goal attempts (78.1 percent), while punting 368 times for an average of 45.8 yards. He was named an East Division all-star in 2017.

The native of Fremont, Neb., has since been a member of the New York Jets (2013, 2020), Dallas Cowboys (2013, 2018-19, 2022), Cleveland Browns (2017), Washington Commanders (2020), Houston Texans (2020), Arizona Cardinals (2020-21), New Orleans Saints (2021), Denver Broncos (2023), and Los Angeles Rams (2023). He has connected on 111-of-139 career NFL field goal attempts (79.9 percent) with a long of 63 yards, while adding 141 extra points for a total of 474 career points.

The Cornhuskers went 7-6 last season, finishing 11th in the Big Ten. They ended the year with a loss to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.
