Sonic the Hedgehog is returning for a fourth installment, and is bringing plenty of old friends with him.
The blue blur’s film adaptations have been some of the most successful video game movies. Critical reception has improved with each release, as has the box office success. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed $492 million, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing film. The only video game movie to outdo it thus far is The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Such resounding success brings the allure of even more Hollywood talent, and Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s cast announcement is no exception. A press release courtesy of Paramount Pictures confirms the principal cast. As expected, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden will reprise their roles as Sonic and Tom, respectively. Idris Elba and Colleen O’Shaughnessey will also return as Knuckles and Tails, Sonic’s best friends and teammates.
In more surprising news, Jim Carrey is set to reprise his role as Doctor Eggman. Despite his apparent near retirement from acting, and the character’s fate at the end of the previous film, Eggman will be back to wreak havoc on the blue blur once again. Lee Majdoub will return as his loyal lackey, Agent Stone. Another returning face (or voice) is Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic’s on-again, off-again frenemy. Tika Sumpter will also return as Tom’s wife, Maddie.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will have plenty of new faces, too, though. Kristen Bell had already been announced as Amy Rose, Sonic’s friend and relentless romantic pursuer. Her first appearance was in a post-credit scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but she didn’t have a voice actress attached until now.
The rest of the new cast have also been revealed, but their roles are not known. Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman and Richard Ayoade will all also feature in this next high-speed adventure.
Alongside the cast announcement, a title announcement video has also been released, which you can watch below.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 hits cinemas March 19th, 2027.
